They're cool just because they're an interesting re-interpretation of conventional posters.
Whereas normal posters are full of graphics and logos as they try to stand out from one another, these posters are all virtually identical save for one colour change.
Whilst product placement itself is a relatively new concept, products have been in movies for years - it's just that they did not pay to make their presence felt.
What would be interesting to do is to look at the brands then and now, and look at the commonalities, which brands still exists, new brands and ones that no longer exist.
There's also the issue of whether all of these are necessarily paid product placement or placed in for other legitimate reasons. MIT, for example, may be referenced because of it's place in global consciousness as a highly respected school for science and engineering thus relaying character information. Likewise particular guns may be chosen because of cultural elements or because they simply have a look that the director or props master likes. For example, the use of a Desert Eagle in the Matrix was likely made more as a choice because of it's large, recognizable profile and noted large caliber rather than sponsorship. The H&K MP5 is widely used by many paramilitary forces worldwide and is very recognizable in this role to audiences.
Separating out paid and unpaid products is thus far more important as one is intended as advertising while the other is simply aesthetic or cultural. On par with referring to "Kleenex" rather than "facial tissue".
These posters give off a very informative view on the amount of sponsors each movie is getting.
A few interesting conclusions can be drawn from these designs like how well does a movie do when it has a ton of sponsors vs. a movie with fewer sponsors.
These posters (albeit on canvas and frame) make a refreshing change to the usual “action packed” movie poster design. They’re alot simpler appealing to the graphically include minimalist, and also state the brands integrated in the films.
These posters are apparently for sale, according to the Antrepo blog, and they're certainly evocative in their simplicity. I don't know if I'd want them on my wall, necessarily, but it's still an interesting premise. I don't know; would you call this pop art?

And they're just aesthetically pleasing.
why are endorsements bad for movies? If Iron Man needed a couple of more million dollars to make it look like visual sex, is it not worth it?
who said it was bad Robert?
oooooook.
I'd love to see one for a Michael Bay movie. It could take a couple of pages though.
Haha very interesting
Fantastic!!
Missing Lamborghini in Iron Man !
You guys just have to start selling those!

Could be an interesting study.
WRT Iron Man, The University of California and Berkeley are actually one and the same.

Paid or unpaid still gets the same effect so I see no need of seperating them out unless you want to crunch in numbers some more.
For the point of the posters it makes no difference.

do you know the typografic used on these posters?
Great posters! Looks like Bourne is the worst of them all.
push it further and make your elements (brand name) in your cloud diff size corresponding to their preponderance in the movies.
